Urgent: PC Champs needs more volunteers! If you are interested in mentoring a student, PLEASE contact Joseph Oliver (details below)
In the 21st century, basic computer skills are essential to succeeding in a course of study at University. At Curtin University, students are required to check your OASIS account every week. Furthermore, assignments generally must be typed - hand-written assignments are no longer acceptable.
For the majority of current students, computer technology does not pose any problems at all, because they have grown up with computers for most of their lives. However, for some Mature-Age students, international students or students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, this may not be the case! Their lack of basic computing skills causes stress and difficulty with coping at university.
Enter PC CHAMPS! Personal Computing Coaching and Help Aimed at Mature-age PersonS program. The aim of PC CHAMPS is to bridge the gap for students finding that they are struggling to keep up because of inexperience with computer programs.
Upgrading computer skills is not only vital for success at studies! Technical know how has become increasingly important to manage all aspects of life in a modern society - be it in education, at work or at home. Online banking, researching for information, shopping on line, emailing, connecting through social networks are all now entrenched into our way of life.
How does PC CHAMPS operate? PC CHAMPS matches students who register for assistance with a volunteer mentor. Lessons are conducted on a one-to-one basis, until the student has the basic computing skill-set they need to progress.

Your program has been extremely helpful to me. I would especially like to thank Tim for his patience, good humour and computer knowledge. I think PC CHAMPS is essential to mature age students who are returning to study. It has certainly been by far the most helpful service I have found on Campus!

Since I had my PC CHAMPS lessons I've started to see things in a different perspective towards my studies. Thanks to PC CHAMPS I now can use my computer and chat with my relatives in Portugal, do my essays and lots more!

The first lesson for PC CHAMPS was good and my mentor gave me a very good tip to learn at home by myself. Thanks very much - you've been such a help

I have joined PC Champs for more than five weeks. My mentor has taught me very useful PC skills during this time. I'm grateful to her for what she has done for me. Through her help, I have learned enough to deal with my University study. Thank you very much!

Yeh, mentoring was great fun. My students have all been really nice people. It's really rewarding teaching people, especially when they get really amazed by what you can do on a computer. My student, who does Asian Studies needs to be proficient in PowerPoint for presentations. She was like WOW! when I showed her how to insert pictures and organisational charts, custom animations and slide transitions.
